How to Store Your Berries

April showers bring May flowers, and berries!

Make summer berries last longer with these prep and storage tips!

First things first, remove and sort fresh berries as soon as you’re home from the market. Rinse and eat any gently bruised berries right away, they’re the most ripe and tastiest. Remove and compost any berries that show signs of mold.

Berries go great together in a smoothie bowl but they aren’t great stored together! Split up all your berries before proceeding. Let’s get to the fun part, how to prep them for storage.

1. Fill a large bowl with 3 cups of cold water mixed with 2 tablespoons of vinegar. Organic white distilled vinegar works just fine! Place one type of berry into the bowl and let soak for approx. 5-10 minutes. Give them a gentle stir every few minutes.

2. When the time is up use a colander to remove the berries.

3. Place berries on a clean dish towel or layer of paper towels and gently blot berries dry.

4. Once berries are completely dry, place them in a sealable container, in a single layer, lined with paper towels. If you need to stack them add a paper towel in between layers. Store in the refrigerator.

Additional Tips:

  • Don’t let one bad berry spoil the bunch! Remove soggy looking berries as you see them so they do not cause the entire bunch to spoil.
  • Keep different berry types separate! They all spoil at different rates.
